Post-Purchase Upsell
The 5-slot funnel tree
How post-purchase funnels branch through up to 5 offer slots.
Every post-purchase funnel has up to 5 offer slots arranged in a decision tree. You set them up on the Upsells tab of a funnel.
The structure
How a buyer flows through
A buyer sees at most 3 offers in sequence — one path through the tree:
- Accepting Upsell 1 leads to Upsell 2, and accepting that leads to Upsell 3.
- Declining Upsell 1 leads to Downsell 1. Declining Upsell 2 leads to Downsell 2.
- The flow ends after Upsell 3 or after either downsell, whether the buyer accepts or declines.
- If an offer's countdown timer runs out, it counts as declined.
Empty and skipped slots
- If Upsell 1 is empty or skipped, the flow starts at the next upsell (Upsell 2, then Upsell 3).
- If Upsell 2 is empty or skipped, accepting Upsell 1 leads straight to Upsell 3.
- If a downsell is empty or skipped, that branch simply ends.
- A funnel with only downsell offers never shows anything.
Oxify skips an offer when:
- Hide offer if product is in original order is on and the buyer already bought that product.
- Hide entire product when out of stock is on and every variant is out of stock.
- An Automatic upsell offer finds no product to recommend.
Slot purposes
- Upsell 1, Upsell 2, Upsell 3 — Follow-up offers the buyer sees as long as they keep accepting — for example a larger or more premium add-on.
- Downsell 1, Downsell 2 — A different (for example cheaper) offer for buyers who declined the upsell before it: Downsell 1 follows Upsell 1, Downsell 2 follows Upsell 2. There is no downsell after Upsell 3.
Best practice
Don't fill every slot just because they exist. Start with Upsell 1, check its numbers on the offer card (views, revenue, revenue per visit and conversion rate for the last 30 days), then add Downsell 1 if few buyers accept.
