Post-Purchase Upsell
Order Status Upsell (OTO) — concept
How Order Status Upsell differs from post-purchase upsell — and when to use it.

OTO — Order Status Upsell — is the post-checkout cousin of the post-purchase funnel.
Key difference
Unlike post-purchase, OTO doesn't add to the existing order. Acceptance sends the buyer to a new checkout for the upsell product.
Pros
- Works on every Shopify plan — post-purchase requires Shopify Payments / certain providers.
- Survives if the buyer abandons mid-flow (the original order is already complete).
- Easier to set up — fewer plan / payment-method gotchas.
Cons
- Less powerful for AOV — buyers must complete a second checkout, so conversion drops.
- Doesn't share payment method — the buyer re-enters card or uses Shop Pay.
When to use which
- Use post-purchase if your plan and payment provider support it. Higher conversion.
- Use OTO if post-purchase isn't available, as a downsell after a declined post-purchase, or as a long-tail "still here?" offer.
