Product upsells, add-ons, bundles and upgrades
Sell more in checkout with an Add button, a checkbox, a bundle or an upgrade.
These four offer types add products to the order. Each one has a Discount step; see Discounts on offers. Product offers hide themselves in checkouts where Shopify doesn't let apps add items.
Product upsell
A product upsell recommends products with an Add button.
Open Checkout Offers (Beta) โ Create offer. Under Upselling, pick Single product, Multi product (stack) or Multi product (carousel), then click Use template. Or scroll to Start from scratch and click Product upsell.
In the Products step, under Choose products, pick where the products come from (see the table below).
Choose a Layout and Show up to. List stacks the products and shows 1 to 10. Carousel (one at a time) lets buyers flip through with Previous and Next and shows 2 to 6.
Under Offer as, choose how the product is sold (see below).
Write the Heading (up to 80 characters), the Button text (up to 20 characters, Add by default) and an optional Subheading (up to 120). You can insert {product}, {discount} and {savings}.
Set the Discount, Where it shows and Who sees it, click Save, then turn the offer on.
Where the products come from
| Choice | Buyers get |
|---|---|
| AI recommendation | Shopify's recommendations for the most valuable item in the buyer's cart. Add a fallback collection ("If Shopify has no recommendation, use this collection (optional)") to fill in when there are none. |
| Specific product | The products you pick with Choose products, up to 10, in the order you drag them. |
| Specific product from a collection | Products from one collection. Checkout looks at the first 12 products of the collection, in the collection's own order. |
| Best sellers | Your most-sold products, counted from your orders. Set the Period to Last 7 days, Last 30 days or Last 60 days. Shopify only lets apps read the last 60 days of orders. Oxify counts them when the offer goes Live and then every day; Refresh now counts again. |
| Trending | Products selling more in the last 14 days than in the 14 before. When there's no clear trend you get best sellers instead. |
| Buy again | Products a signed-in buyer ordered in the last 60 days. Everyone else sees the AI recommendation. You can add a fallback collection. |
| From a metafield | A product list you keep in a metafield on your products, read from the buyer's highest-value item. Enter it as namespace.key; the default is custom.upsell_products. It must be a list of products (list.product_reference) that the storefront can read. Items without it get the AI recommendation. You can add a fallback collection. |
| Advanced custom logic | Rows that read "when the cart has this, offer that". See below. |
| Re-offer from the cart | Another unit of an item the buyer already has: pick Most expensive item or Least expensive item. It always shows one product, so there is no layout or count. The discount only applies while that item stays in the order. |
Advanced custom logic. Each row has When the cart has (products or collections to watch for), Offer (up to 3) (products to offer) and a Discount percentage, where 0 means no discount. Click Add row for more, up to 5 rows. Rows are checked top to bottom and the first row that matches one of the buyer's own items is used. Rows watch up to 50 products in total, collections included. Everything else decides what buyers who match no row see: AI recommendation (at the offer's discount) or Show nothing. A row with a percentage needs a discount chosen in the Discount step, which is also the discount for everything else.
Subscriptions
Offer as has three choices:
- One-time only (the default). Products that can only be bought as a subscription are skipped.
- Subscription only. Products that have subscription plans are added on a plan.
- Both, buyer chooses. Buyers pick One-time or the subscription. Pre-selected sets which one starts selected.
Products without subscription plans are always offered one-time. The subscription price comes from the product's plan, and your discount applies to the first order.
More options
Open More options to add extras to each product card:
- Show review stars from your reviews app, with a Minimum rating from 1 to 5 and Show review count. Stars are on by default, from 4 stars up, on products that have a rating.
- Quantity selector, with a Max from 1 to 10. The discount still stops at the number of items you allow in the Discount step.
- Short description: the first lines of the product description, with "More" to read the rest.
- Layout: Compact (small image beside) or Large image (image above).
- If the buyer already has the product in their cart: Show the next product (the default) or Show it anyway.
What buyers see
- Each card shows the product image, name and price. A discounted price shows the original crossed out and your label, such as SAVE 10%. Prices are in the buyer's currency. A product with several available variants gets a drop-down.
- Tapping the button adds the item to the order. The button reads "โ Added" for a moment, then the row gives way to the next product.
- Products already in the cart, sold-out products, gift cards and products not available in the buyer's market are skipped. When nothing is left, the whole offer hides instead of showing an empty header.
- If adding fails, buyers see "Couldn't add this item. Please try again."
Add-on checkbox
A checkbox that adds one product, such as shipping protection or gift wrap. It is never ticked by default.
Open Checkout Offers (Beta) โ Create offer. Under Upselling, pick Checkbox upsell and one of the chips Shipping protection, Gift wrap, Warranty or Priority handling. Or choose Start from scratch โ Add-on.
In the Add-on step, click Choose product and pick the variant the checkbox adds. Templates start without a product, so the offer can't go Live until you choose one.
Write the Checkbox label (up to 80 characters). Include {price} so buyers know what ticking costs; it shows in the buyer's currency. {product} inserts the product name. Add an optional Short description of up to 150 characters.
Set the Discount, Where it shows (it starts Under shipping options) and Who sees it, then Save and turn the offer on.
Ticking adds the product to the order. Unticking removes that line, and only that line: an item the buyer added themselves is never touched. If the buyer already has the product in their cart, the offer hides.
Bundle
Sell two or three products together.
Open Checkout Offers (Beta) โ Create offer. Under Upselling, pick Bundle and click Use template.
In the Bundle step, click Choose products and pick 2 or 3 products. Each product can be in the bundle once.
Edit the Heading (starts as "Complete the set") and the Button text (starts as "Add all {count} ยท {total}", up to 30 characters). {count} is the number of items and {total} is the set's price in the buyer's currency.
In the Discount step, choose No discount, % off the set or Amount off the set (once). Then set Where it shows and Who sees it, Save and turn the offer on.
Add all is all-or-nothing: if one item can't be added, the others are taken back out. The discount applies only while every item is in the cart. If one product is removed later, buyers see an Add button for the missing one. The whole offer hides when the buyer already has one of the products in their cart on its own.
Upgrade
Swap a cart item for a better product.
Open Checkout Offers (Beta) โ Create offer. Under Upselling, pick Upgrade an item and click Use template.
In the Upgrade step, under Replace these products, choose the items that can be upgraded (up to 10). Under With, click Choose the upgrade.
Edit the Heading (starts as "Upgrade and save"), the Text (starts as "Swap {item} for {product}", up to 120 characters) and the Button text (starts as "Upgrade ยท {price}"). {price} is what the upgrade costs on top, for the item's quantity.
Tick Also when the item is already discounted or Also when its quantity is more than 1 (every unit is upgraded) if you want those cases covered. Then set the Discount, Where it shows and Who sees it, Save and turn the offer on.
The offer shows for the first matching item in the cart. The upgrade is added first, then the item is removed; if removing fails, the upgrade is taken back. Buyers can undo it with Undo. Subscriptions, free gifts and bundle items are never swapped.
Upgrade revenue in your results counts the upgraded item's full price, not only the extra the buyer paid.
