Discounts on offers

Add a discount to an offer, how the automatic Oxify discount works, and how to fix a Needs attention message.

Which offers can have a discount

Product upsell, Add-on checkbox, Bundle, Upgrade and Item protection have a Discount step. A Progress bar has one for the products in its Close the gap row. A Free gift is always free (100% off, one per order) and has no discount settings. Offers that don't add products, such as messages and badges, have none.

Add a discount

Open the offer and open its Discount step. On a progress bar, open Close the gap, tick Suggest products that close the gap and use the Discount section.

Choose the kind: No discount, % off, Amount off each item or Amount off the offer's items (once per order). A bundle offers No discount, % off the set and Amount off the set (once) instead.

Type the value: Percent off (1 to 100), or the amount in your store currency.

Optional: set the Label buyers see. Leave it empty to use the automatic label, such as SAVE 10% or SAVE $5.00. It can be up to 30 characters and shows as a badge next to the price.

Set Max discounted items per product and Only when the cart is at least if you need them (see below), then click Save. The step shows Discount ready when Shopify has the discount.

The settings:

  • Amount off the offer's items (once per order) takes one amount off per order, shared by the offer's items in proportion to their price, never more than they cost.
  • Discount from (percent only): Price, or Compare-at price to take the percentage off the compare-at price. The result is never higher than the item's regular price, and items without a compare-at price use the price.
  • Max discounted items per product: 1 to 10, or No limit. It starts at 1. It counts every line of the same product in the cart, so splitting a product over several lines doesn't multiply the discount.
  • Only when the cart is at least: the discount applies only from this cart value. It counts the buyer's own items before discounts, not the items from your offers.
  • Bigger discount for bigger carts: tick it to add up to 3 tiers, each with a Cart at least value and a bigger discount than the one before. Click Add tier for more. The biggest tier the cart reaches applies.
  • Different discount on the first subscription order: for a product upsell that can be bought on a subscription, set a different Subscription first order percentage instead of the discount above.

Amounts and minimums are set in your store currency and converted for buyers who pay in another currency. A percentage discount rounds down to the smallest unit of the currency, as Shopify does.

How the automatic discount works

  • As soon as you create or save an offer with a discount, Oxify creates one automatic discount in Shopify, named Oxify checkout offers. It serves every offer, and Oxify updates it whenever you save.
  • It discounts only items added from an offer, and only the products that offer covers. It never touches other items in the cart.
  • Buyers see the discounted price on the offer, and Shopify applies the discount in checkout.
  • It follows the combine settings in the cart editor, under Cart editor β†’ Settings β†’ Advanced settings: Combine with other Order discounts, Combine with other Product discounts and Combine with other Shipping discounts. All three are on by default. When order discounts are off, Shopify keeps only one order discount, such as a cart reward or a discount code, and can drop the offer's discount. The offer then shows This discount may be dropped with an Open cart editor button.

Manage it from the offers

Don't delete or turn off Oxify checkout offers in Shopify's Discounts page. While it is off, discounted offers are hidden from checkout until you click Turn back on. If you delete it, Oxify tries to restore it when you open the app.

The discount status

The Discount step shows one of these:

  • Setting up discount… while Oxify talks to Shopify.
  • "The discount is set up in Shopify when you save." The discount isn't set up until you save. For a paused offer it says "when this offer goes live."
  • Not set up yet: "The discount isn't set up yet." Click Retry.
  • Discount ready: all good.
  • Needs attention: a red banner with a message and a button. It adds "Buyers won't see this offer's discounted price until this is fixed."

While a discount needs attention, the offer is hidden from checkout, so buyers never see a price Shopify won't honour. An offer with a discount can't go Live until its discount is ready: the editor saves it but says "Saved, but not live yet: the discount needs attention." The Checkout Offers (Beta) page lists these offers in a banner, "1 offer needs attention", with a Review link to the offer's Discount step.
