Progress bar and free gift

Show buyers how close they are to free shipping or a discount, and let them claim a free gift at a cart value.

Progress bar

A progress bar shows how close the buyer is to a reward, such as free shipping, with a message and a bar that fills as the cart grows. It updates live while the buyer edits the cart.

Open Checkout Offers (Beta) → Create offer. Under Rewards, pick Free-shipping bar and click Use template. Or scroll to Start from scratch and click Progress bar.

In the Goal step, choose where the goal comes from (see below).

Write the Message before the goal and the Message at the goal, and choose what happens When the goal is reached.

Optional: open the Close the gap step to suggest products that close the gap.

Set Where it shows and Who sees it, click Save, then turn the offer on.

Goal comes from

  • My cart rewards (recommended: "always matches what buyers get"). Pick the Reward: Free shipping or Order discount. The step lists your tiers, for example "Free shipping at $200.00". With several tiers, the bar tracks the next one the buyer hasn't reached yet, then says it's unlocked after the last. Market tiers, currency goals and excluded customer tags from your cart rewards are used too. See How to set up rewards in the cart drawer app.
  • My own goal. Under Measure by, choose Cart total or Number of items, then type the Goal. A cart total goal is in your store currency and is converted for each buyer; an item goal is a whole number from 1 to 1,000. Fill in Reward name (up to 40 characters), the words that {reward} shows in the messages, such as "free shipping". The bar only shows progress, so make sure the reward itself exists: cart rewards, a Shopify discount or a free-shipping rate.

A bar linked to cart rewards can't go Live until the reward exists. The step tells you why: "Turn on rewards in Cart settings first.", "Your cart rewards discount is turned off in Shopify.", "We couldn't read your cart rewards. Refresh to try again.", "Cart rewards has no automatic free-shipping tier." or "Cart rewards has no automatic order discount tier." When rewards aren't set up at all, the step also shows an Open cart settings button.

Once live, a linked bar hides itself for buyers it can't work for: when the reward is turned off or has no tier, when the buyer has a customer tag you excluded from rewards, or when a currency conversion isn't available.

Also show my free gift goals as steps adds your Live free gifts as steps on the bar. It works for bars that count the cart total, because gift goals are amounts. A bar shows up to four steps.

Messages

  • Message before the goal (up to 120 characters) must include {amount}, which shows the money left, or "2 items" for an item goal. {reward} shows the reward name. It starts as "You're {amount} away from {reward}".
  • Message at the goal (up to 120 characters) starts as "You've unlocked {reward}".
  • When the goal is reached: Keep the bar with the message or Hide the bar.

Close the gap

Tick Suggest products that close the gap to show the cheapest product or products whose price closes the gap to the next step. If none is enough, the most expensive ones show, since they get the buyer closest. The row is hidden once every step is reached, and products already in the cart never show.

  • Products come from: A.I. recommended: related to the cart, Complementary: set up in Shopify Search & Discovery, A collection (Oxify looks at its 30 cheapest products) or Products I choose (up to 15).
  • Products to show: 1 to 3.
  • Heading (up to 80 characters) can use {reward} and {amount}. Set the Button text and decide whether to Show review stars (4★ and up).
  • A Discount section sets the discount on those products. Products are picked by their price after the discount.

Free gift

A free gift lets buyers claim a gift once their cart reaches a value.

Open Checkout Offers (Beta) → Create offer. Under Rewards, pick Free gift over $X and click Use template. Or choose Start from scratch → Free gift.

In the Gift step, click Choose products and pick up to 3 gifts. Buyers choose one. The gift is free (100% off), one per order.

Edit the Heading (starts as "You've unlocked a free gift!") and the Button text (starts as "Claim").

Optional: tick Show before it's unlocked to show a line and a progress bar with how much more the buyer needs to spend. Edit the Text; it must include {amount} and can use {product}. It starts as "Spend {amount} more to get a free gift".

In the Goal step, set Unlock when the cart reaches to an amount in your store currency. It starts at 50. It counts the buyer's items at their price before discounts, not the gift itself. Items added from other offers count, so an upsell can help reach the goal.

Check the gift guard status in the same step (see below), set Where it shows and Who sees it, click Save, then turn the offer on.

What buyers see: before the goal, your Text line and a bar (if you left Show before it's unlocked on). Once the goal is reached, the gifts appear with a Claim button. The gift is never added by itself. After a claim, the offer reads "Free gift added:" followed by the product name. If the cart drops back below the goal, the gift is taken out after a moment and a note explains that the cart is under the goal, so the free gift was removed. A free gift can't be A/B tested.

The gift guard

Free gifts rely on a small Shopify rule, the gift guard. It blocks payment while a free gift is in the cart without its discount, for example when the cart no longer reaches the goal, with a message such as "The free gift needs a cart of $50.00 or more. Remove it to continue." The same guard also covers free gifts from the Oxify cart drawer.

The Goal step shows its state:

  • Gift guard on: ready.
  • "The gift guard is turned on when you save": it turns on the first time you save a free gift.
  • Gift guard needs attention: click Turn on if you turned it off in Shopify under Settings, Checkout, Checkout rules; click Approve permission if Oxify needs one more permission; otherwise click Retry.

Until the gift guard is on, free gifts stay hidden from checkout, even when the offer is Live.
