How free gifts work
A quick technical primer on how Oxify adds free gifts and makes them free at checkout using Shopify Functions.
Free gifts use two parts working together: the cart drawer puts the gift in the cart, and a Shopify Function makes it free at checkout. The Function is part of the Oxify discount, Oxify Cart Unified Discount, so Shopify treats it like any other automatic discount.
Two layers
Cart drawer (UI)
The cart drawer shows the progress bar and handles the gift line:
- Free Gift Automatic tiers — the drawer adds the gift to the cart as soon as the cart reaches the threshold, and removes it if the cart drops back below it.
- Free Gift Manual tiers — once the threshold is reached, the shopper picks their gift from a card in the cart.
Shopify Function (logic)
At checkout, the Function checks your reward tiers against the cart again and takes 100% off the gift lines in the cart (one unit of each gift). It doesn't add products itself — the cart drawer puts the gift line in the cart.
Why this matters
- The price is set at checkout — A gift is only free while the cart still meets the tier. If it doesn't, the gift line is charged at its normal price.
- Gifts don't count toward goals — Gift lines are left out of the cart total and item count, so a gift can't push the cart over a threshold.
- Native compatibility — Shopify treats it like any other automatic discount, and your combination settings apply (see Stacking rules with Shopify discounts).
