How box discounts are calculated

Which box earns the discount, and what customers actually pay for each discount type.

The discount is worked out at cart and checkout from the box settings you last saved — not from anything in the shopper's browser. After you edit a box, click Save so the new numbers go live.

Which box applies

The customer gets the discount of the biggest box whose Quantity their item count has reached.

  • On boxes of 6 and 10, a customer with 10 items gets the Box of 10 discount.
  • Fewer items than your smallest box earn no discount.
  • If two boxes have the same quantity, the first one in your list is used.
  • Items are counted one per place in the box, so the same product added three times counts as three.

What each discount type does

Take a Box of 4 whose items cost $12, $8, $15 and $10 — $45 together.

Discount TypeWhat the customer pays
No DiscountThe items' normal prices: $45.00.
% OffThe items' normal total minus the percentage. At 10, that's $40.50.
Fixed PriceExactly your fixed price, whichever items they choose. At 36, that's $36.00.
  • The box total is built from the items' current prices, so a product already on sale counts at its sale price.
  • Fixed Price only lowers the total. If the items cost less than your fixed price, the customer pays the normal price.
  • A customer who buys two of the same bundle pays twice the fixed price.
  • % Off can't go above 100, and a value of 0 means no discount.

Other currencies

You enter a Fixed Price in your store's currency. For customers shopping in another currency with Shopify Markets, it's converted with Shopify's exchange rate for that currency. A percentage needs no conversion.

One line or many lines

How the discount appears depends on Show products as individual lines in the cart, under Settings → General Settings → Advanced settings.

  • Off (the default): the whole bundle is one cart line with the bundle's name, and the discount is built into that line's price.
  • On: every product keeps its own cart line, and the discount is taken off each line under the bundle's name. The saving on each item is worked out from the percentage and rounded down to the cent, so a total can land a cent or two above the exact percentage. A fixed price is shared across the lines in proportion to their prices, so the total matches your fixed price exactly.

Discount missing?

Work through Discount not applying at checkout if the total at checkout doesn't match what you expect.
